What to Expect Before, During, and After Mohs Surgery

Mohs surgery is one of the most advanced and effective treatments for skin cancer, providing the highest cure rates while preserving as much healthy skin as possible. At Mohave Dermatology, with offices in Las Vegas, Mesquite, and Pahrump, NV, our providers deliver skilled, compassionate care to make each step of the process comfortable and reassuring.

Before Your Mohs Surgery

Before the procedure, our team will review your diagnosis, explain the Mohs process in detail, and answer any questions you may have. You may be instructed to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, a few days beforehand. It’s recommended to eat a light meal before surgery and wear loose, comfortable clothing. Because the process can take several hours, depending on how many layers need to be removed, consider bringing something to read or do while you wait.

During the Procedure

Mohs surgery is performed under local anesthesia, so you’ll remain awake but comfortable throughout. The dermatologist removes a thin layer of visible cancerous tissue, which is then examined under a microscope while you wait. If cancer cells are still detected, additional layers are carefully removed only from affected areas. This process continues until no cancer cells remain.

This precise approach allows your provider to completely remove the cancer while sparing healthy tissue. Once all cancer has been cleared, the wound may be closed with stitches or left to heal naturally, depending on its size and location.

After Your Mohs Surgery

After surgery, you’ll receive clear instructions on how to care for the treated area to support healing and prevent infection. Mild swelling, redness, or tenderness is common and typically fades within a few days. Keeping the wound clean and following aftercare directions carefully helps ensure a smooth recovery.

Most patients can resume light activity within a few days, though strenuous exercise should be avoided until cleared by your provider. Follow-up visits are important to monitor healing and check for any recurrence of skin cancer.
