Rosacea Q & A

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition that affects the face. It usually starts out as flushing or blushing on the nose and cheeks, spreading to the chin and forehead. Over time, you may develop visible blood vessels on the nose or cheeks, or bumps that look like acne.

Rosacea is a common long-term skin condition that usually appears between the ages of 30 and 50. If you have a family history of rosacea, you’re at greater risk of having it.

What are the subtypes of rosacea?

The signs and symptoms of rosacea vary. The Mohave Dermatology team classifies rosacea into subtypes based on your symptoms. These subtypes include:

Subtype 1

People with subtype 1 rosacea may have facial redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels, also known as spider veins.

Subtype 2

With subtype 2 rosacea, you have facial redness, flushing, and spider veins along with acne and raised patches of skin. People with this subtype may also have oily skin.

Subtype 3

Subtype 3 is rare. People with this subtype develop thick, bumpy skin on their nose, chin, cheeks, forehead, and ears. They also have large pores and oily skin.

Subtype 4

Subtype 4 rosacea affects the eyes, causing them to look watery and red. People with this subtype may also have dry eyes or blurry vision, along with broken blood vessels on their eyelids.

What can I expect during a rosacea consultation?

You can expect a patient-centered consultation when you visit Mohave Dermatology for rosacea. The team asks detailed questions about your skin and symptoms, as well as your medical and family histories.

They also review your skin care routine and examine your skin. Though they can diagnose rosacea after a physical exam, your dermatologist may take a skin biopsy to rule out other conditions that may explain your facial redness.

What treatments can improve my rosacea?

While there’s no cure for rosacea, the team at Mohave Dermatology can design a plan that reduces the redness and flushing and improves the look of your skin. Treatments that can improve your rosacea include:

  • Daily use of sunblock
  • Gentle skin care routine
  • Topical creams and lotions
  • Oral antibiotics
  • Laser therapy for severe symptoms

Most patients see improvements in their rosacea within 1-2 months of starting treatment. You must stay with the recommended skin care routine to prevent rosacea flare-ups.
